Where our stones come from

We sell both. Natural stones and laboratory-grown ones, and every piece tells you which it is: on its page, in its description, and on the report that comes in the box.

Natural stones

The aquamarines, sapphires, emeralds, tanzanite, peridot and turquoise are mined, cut and set. Every natural center stone big enough to be graded goes to GIA for an independent report. Where a stone has been treated, and most emeralds are oiled and nearly all tanzanite is heated, the page says so before you buy rather than after.

Natural diamonds we source to order, through suppliers who warrant compliance with the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, the framework that governs rough natural diamonds.

Laboratory-grown diamonds

A laboratory-grown diamond is grown in a controlled facility rather than mined. It is chemically, physically and optically identical to a mined diamond.

From half a carat up, every center stone comes with its own GIA or IGI report: how it was grown, its measurements, its grades, and a report number you can look up yourself. You never pay extra for it. The report is part of the price.

Laboratory-grown colored stones, the emeralds, rubies and sapphires, carry an identification report of their own. It says what the stone is and how it was made, which is the same thing the product title says, and it comes in the box either way.

Some stones never get a report, and we say so

Pave, halo, tennis and eternity stones are matched by hand, natural and laboratory-grown alike. Nobody grades a 2 mm stone individually, and anyone promising a certificate on one is promising paper that does not exist. Every product page says which of the two you are looking at.

What we will not tell you

We will not tell you a laboratory-grown diamond is better for the planet. Growing one takes real energy, the published figures on both sides are disputed, and we cannot verify them for you. What we can verify is where a stone came from and what an independent laboratory said about it.
